5 Wedding Registry Gifts to Avoid

kitchen_appliance-01.jpgHoping to make the most of your wedding registry? Think twice before registering for the following items. Between delicate dining room pieces you'll seldom use to faddish appliances that serve only one purpose, we think you'll fare much better steering clear of these five gifts.

Small Appliance Fads. Resist the temptation to register for "cool" kitchen appliances like ice cream makers, waffle irons, fondue kits, and panini presses -- items that you'll likely end up using very infrequently. Meanwhile, these products will take up a lot of room in your house, especially if you end up acquiring quite a few. Also, as a good rule of thumb, don't register for gifts that require more space than you have to store them.

Cleaning Supplies. Guests will be less than thrilled to gift you things like Pledge, a mop, and carpet cleaner. Who really wants to be thought of when you're scrubbing the toilet, anyway?

Fine China and Crystal. Are these items usually beautiful? Absolutely. Fragile? Most definitely. Practical for today's modern couple? Not at all. Unless you're hosting get-togethers for small groups every other week, these pieces will just end up collecting dust in your dining room display case.

Monogrammed Products. Whether it's bath towels, cutting boards, or pillows, monogramming can really hike up the total cost of a gift. On the heels of your recent wedding, it's perfectly understandable that including your initials on a variety of home items is a high priority. But if you're like me and always looking to stretch that dollar, skip this pricey add-on so you can include a few more practical gifts on your registry.

Super Expensive Items. When it comes to expensive registry gifts, it's very common for gift givers to split the total cost with others. However, these items typically include common household products like outdoor grills, televisions, or dining sets. But if you have your eye on something really high-priced (let's say a custom-built outdoor Jacuzzi that's north of $10K), that extreme amount will likely be a deterrent to friends and family.
